Update from council leader - 24 February

Time Square office building

Cllr Paul Bettison, OBE, Leader of Bracknell Forest Council, said:

I hope that following the announcement of the roadmap to ease lockdown restrictions on Monday, we are all able to breathe a sigh of relief at a clearer picture of what the future may hold.

The Prime Minister announced the 4 key stages of this roadmap, with the first being all children and students will return to face-to-face education in schools and colleges on Monday 8 March.

Step two, which will be no earlier than Monday 12 April, will see the opening of:

  • non-essential retail
  • personal care premises such as hairdressers and nail salons
  • public buildings including libraries and community centres

The third step which will begin no earlier than Monday 17 May, will see the government will look to continue easing limits on seeing friends and family wherever possible, allowing people to decide on the appropriate level of risk for their circumstances.

The final step, which will take place no earlier than Monday 21 June, is when the government hopes to be able to remove all legal limits on social contact. Before step 4 begins, the government will complete a review of social distancing and other long-term measures that have been put in place to cut transmission. Full details of this roadmap can be found on GOV.UK.

Until these steps and key dates arrive, we urge people to continue with the great work you have all been doing by sticking to the regulations, staying at home and using the hands, face, space rules when out in public. We need to continue this until such time as restrictions are lifted to protect our loved ones and our community.

While this roadmap is certainly something that the nation should be celebrating, I would also like to take a moment to celebrate a local triumph which took place recently. Last week the transformation of the Braccan Walk youth hub was completed. This site used to be the ground floor of a car park, and it has now been transformed into a modern and colourful youth centre for young people in Bracknell Forest.

I am delighted to have the youth hub completed and ready for young people in Bracknell Forest, who can hopefully enjoy it soon. You can take a look at photos of the modern and colourful youth centre, on our Facebook page.

Have a good week, and stay safe.
