Citizenship ceremonies are required for successful applicants to formally attain British citizenship.
The process starts when you apply to UK Visas and Immigration for British Citizenship.
Booking a ceremony
If your application for British Citizenship is successful, you'll receive an invitation letter from the Home Office to attend a Citizenship Ceremony. Please fill in the make an enquiry form and we will contact you to book your online ceremony. Please note that due to coronavirus, you now have 6 months to attend a citizenship ceremony.
Please make sure you keep the Home Office letter confirming you have been successful. You will need to show this when you attend your ceremony, along with your photo ID.
As an alternative to socially distanced group ceremonies, virtual group or family ceremonies by video conferencing are now available. Guests at group ceremonies can unfortunately not be accommodated.
We will confirm the details of your online ceremony by email including a link to join the ceremony with the words to the Allegiance Oath or Affirmation and pledge that you need to say during the ceremony.
Technical help for video conferencing
The ceremony will be conducted over Microsoft Teams so you can be seen and heard. You can either download the Teams app to your device or copy the link provided in your confirmation email into a web browser. If you need further help there are videos available on YouTube or helpful hints on the Microsoft website which can guide you through how to use the software.
Before the ceremony starts, you will be asked to show your invitation and photo ID to the Registrar who will host the ceremony.
Allegiance Oath or Affirmation
After speeches of welcome, the Registrar will invite you to swear the Oath of Allegiance or, if you prefer, to speak the Affirmation of Allegiance (as chosen when you book). If you are going to swear the Oath before Almighty God, you may have a holy book with you.
This is followed by making a pledge of loyalty to the United Kingdom.
The ceremony is closed with the playing of the National Anthem. The ceremony lasts approximately 40 minutes.
Your citizenship certificate will be sent to you within 10 working days.
You will already have paid for the group ceremony as part of the British Citizenship application.
